LAKE MANITOU

Lake Manitou is closed to all DAY USAGE!
ALL ramps are cabled OFF!

IBF President Doug Bradley and Mitch Hayes attended a special meeting on September 7th at the Rochester City Hall. There were about 100 people in attendance. The DNR (Doug Keller) went into great depths over all the findings and what they have done and what they are in the planning stages of for the treatment of the lake for the Hydrillia. Slides were shown of Hydrillia in other lakes in Maine and Florida. He stated that Florida spends 40 Million a year to treat and keep "running lanes" open for their boat traffic. Hydrilla can be spread by weed fragments, seeds, tubules and bulbs! ALL boats etc should be cleaned of all weeds and washed 104F water! If this got a real hold in any lake it could choke it off to all usage. This weed can grow at a rate of 1 inch a week and at depths up to 20 feet deep! It will cost $500,000 a year to treat or $2Million for 4 years! This is a major weed and needs to be eradicated NOW! Before it gets into any other lake and destroys what we take for granted!!! With all our help we can STOP it here in Lake Manitou! It will take everyone to eliminate this weed problem! Clean all weeds from your boat / trailer before you leave a lake and wash it down before you go to another lake. That should be the standard for all lakes we use. "STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKERS"

The dredging project is still going forth as the LMA has the permits to do other areas of the lake. This will be an on going project for the LMA. They have held a pontoon boat raffle (2yrs) and a tour of homes on the lake as fundraisers. They also raised the annual LMA dues to help support the projects. The $10,000 the Federation and the $500 Fulton County Bass Masters donated to the Lake Manitou Association has helped with the First permitted areas. It has cost over $129,000 for the dredging and they are still working on another $100,000 grant for the needed permitted areas. Both projects are very expensive. The LMA will accept any donations of any value for either of the two projects (dredging / Hydrillia eradication). Contact Mitch Hayes 574-223-3407.

The rumors are TRUE about the Hydrillia verticallata found In Lake Manitou. Yes, the DNR found the WEED in late August! They sprayed 20 acres with Komeen to kill what is there? The DNR has restricted the lake to what, who and how the lake can be used in 2007.
