1st Annual Mike James Memorial Scholarship
Benefit Open Team

By Eldon Crabtree

Sunday morning, August 4,2002 3:00am at Cutright Point shelter house at that time only 21 teams entered in the tournament by 5:30am 49 teams entered into the event.

With temperatures in the high 70's with a forecast of 97 degrees with a heat index of 107 bright blue skies 47 out of the 49 teams entered where released to search for that early morning bite at 5:30am with a check in time of 1:30pm.

The temperature did exactly what was forecast a blistering hot humid day. The tournament crew set-up the scales by noon for those that had enough of the heat or for those that where afriad of losing thier catch. Some of the teams came in early to get out of the heat and weigh thier catch.

At 1:30pm all teams where in and the weigh-in was in full swing, 7 lbs.,9 lbs., 11 lbs.,fish where being weighed all over the scales until one team walked up with 2 bags full of water and bass to be more exact 9 bass weighing 34.93lbs. Dan Simmons weigh master had to weigh 3 different bass to detemine which fish was going to be Big Bass and a 6.13lbs was the winner. This was one of the nicest and biggest catches that I have seen in many years on Lake Monroe.

Mike left us 3 days after Christmas 2001 but he left us with memories, friendship and the attitude to always strive to move forward and because of Mike's involvement with the Indiana Federation for my 23 years we have always moved forward although Mike is gone he will never be forgotten and you the fisherman of this event have started a memorial that will continue for many years to come.
